Chego na última postagem sobre o poder da indústria em promover o crescimento econômico. Diz o autor que vimos consultando desde aqui:


There are powerful empirical and theoretical arguments in favour of industrialisation as the main engine of growth in economic development. The arguments can be summarised as follows:

8. As per capita incomes rise, the share of agricultural expenditures in total expenditures declines and the share of expenditures on manufactured goods increases (Engel’s law). Countries specialising in agricultural and primary production will not profit from expanding world markets for manufacturing goods. These arguments are frequently mentioned in the literature and are often considered self-evident,though the recent literature increasing questions whether manufacturing will continue to be the engine of growth. We examine the empirical support for these arguments. In doing so, we may find that some of the arguments need to be qualified. They should also be considered in a temporal perspective. The applicability of different arguments may well differ in different historical contexts. The sources of growth change over time.

A lei de Engel é mais velha que a humanidade. Só que tem gente que pensa que ela vale apenas para a agropecuária. Mas olha o que diz este paper que está fazendo 20 anos:

[...] o ponto de vista de que as elasticidades da demanda pelos produtos industriais declinaram com a elevação da renda e com a acumulação dos bens de consumo duráveis nas economias industrializadas.

e que eu citei em 2001.

E claro que temos que ficar pensando, como alertei na postagem número 7 (ontem), se a negadinha está incluindo o agronegócio na indústria ou se o acha substantivamente igual à agropecuária.

E aqui destaco o que o autor diz:

Ou seja, no tempo antigo viu-se correlação entre indústria e crescimento. E no caso da Nova Ásia também. Mas o problema é que o Brasil não está na Ásia e nem está no passado remoto. Estamos no mundo presente com os problemas e oportunidades do presente. E esta de que as fontes do crescimento mudam ao longo do tempo? Parece óbvio. E também tentei deixar óbvio que a maior parte da turma que pensa na industrialização como mandatória é nacionalista, não pensa na economia mundial como realidade a ser aprofundada e não a se reacionar contra. Claro que, hoje em dia, só podemos pensar na economia mundial a partir da instituição da renda básica universal.

Encerro aqui os comentários sobre as virtudes da industrialização. Isto não significa que não voltarei ao tema, mesmo que este se vista de incursões aos setores agroindustrial e terciário.
